A headstone has been erected on the grave of a tragic Dundee toddler who was suffocated by a soft toy, following a fundraising appeal.

Connie Rose was just 18 months old when she died overnight on March 6 this year.

Her heartbroken mum Dexy-Leigh Walsh launched an awareness campaign to highlight the dangers of allowing young children to sleep next to stuffed toys in the wake of Connie Rose’s death.

Soft toys had been stuffed down the side of the youngster’s bed to stop her falling between the mattress and the wall and hitting her head.

It is thought a large teddy fell on Connie Rose as she slept.

Although Dexy tried CPR after finding Connie Rose, she was pronounced dead at the scene and buried at Birkhill Cemetery on March 21.

Nearly nine months later a successful fundraising campaign for a headstone has been completed.

Donations of £650 were made to an online fundraiser while a fun day at the Fairfield Sports and Social Club in June also contributed to the £4000 target.

A post by Dexy on the Connie Rose Awareness Facebook page, set up to warn other parents about the dangers of soft toys, stated: “Nearly eight month later but my baby girl’s stone is up… think it’s hit me in the face a bit that she’s not coming home.

“Never knew what missing someone felt like until it was all I can do. Love you Connie, you’re my world we miss you so much.

“Your big sister still plays away with you I hope you’re playing with her.”

The headstone features a picture of Connie Rose and reads: “Forever in our hearts Connie Rose.

“Born on September 16 1016, sadly grew her wings on March 6 2018.

“Cherished daughter of Dexy-Leigh and stepdaughter to Murray, special sister to Dior much loved granddaughter, niece and cousin.

“Sleep tight princess xxx.”
