Police probe death at Dundee multi-storey amid claims deceased had been pursued by officers

Police are probing the unexplained death of a man amid claims he fell from a Dundee multi-storey while being pursued by officers.

A large number of police vehicles and a crew from the Scottish Ambulance Service were rushed to the scene at Adamson Court in Lochee on Monday. The time of the incident has not been confirmed.

Circumstances surrounding the death are currently under investigation and a spokeswoman for Police Scotland refused to comment on claims the man was being sought by officers.

The area was sealed off from a pedestrian path near Lochee Road to neighbouring Elders Court and is expected to remain restricted for some time, with access only permitted for residents. A white incident tent was seen set up on the car park floor.

Friends were visibly upset at the scene last night and said they were searching for answers following the death of the man, described as in his late-30s.

Danny Montague, 28, who had been a close friend for more than a decade, said he was told by eyewitnesses that police were warned to “stay back” before the man fell a reported 15 floors to his death.

“We were close friends – I knew him well,” Mr Montague said.

“I just saw him yesterday and shook his hand. We were just talking about what we had been up to.

“I used to stay across the road from him and I’ve known him for more than 10 years. He had no mental health issues. None of this makes sense.”

Another friend, who asked to be identified only as Jade, paid tribute to the deceased and said loved ones urgently need answers.

She added: “I’m absolutely heartbroken. I can’t understand why police would have a reason to chase him. ”

An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, also reported seeing a police pursuit and shouting coming from the block of flats. She said a woman had been escorted away from the scene by police officers.

On Tuesday morning, police “categorically” denied the claims they had any prior interaction with the man.

Superintendent Graeme Murdoch of Tayside Division said: “I can categorically confirm at this stage that officers of Police Scotland had no involvement whatsoever in the circumstances leading up to this tragic incident.

“We were neither seeking the man concerned in relation to other enquiries, nor was there any kind of pursuit or contact by officers prior to the incident.

“Whilst it is important that communities in Dundee have confidence that officers did not in any way contribute to the circumstances, it is even more important that the man’s family know what happened and that is our priority today.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends as they try to deal with this tragic incident”.

On Monday evening a spokeswoman for the force said: “Police Scotland is currently dealing with an unexplained death at Adamson Court, Dundee.

“Circumstances surrounding the death are currently under investigation. There will be a Police presence at this locus for some time

“Please note until identification of the deceased is known and Next of Kin have been made aware, there will be no further information passed.”
