Construction has begun on 20 new council houses in Glenrothes.

Labour councillor Judy Hamilton, convener of Fife Council’s community and housing services committee, performed the sod-cutting ceremony as work finally began on the site of the former Alan Mclure House care home this week.

The development is part of the third phase of the local authority’s affordable housing programme, which aims to deliver 3,500 new houses across the region.

Where possible, the authority wants to regenerate sites and buildings no longer in use.

The Alan Mclure House site in Balbirnie Road will be home to seven two-bedroom houses, 11 three-bedroom homes and two with four bedrooms.

Ms Hamilton said: “I’m pleased to be here celebrating that work is now under way here at Balbirnie.

“The mix of house types is great for families and will provide 20 high-quality council houses and, combined with the Cullen Drive and Happer Crescent developments, will see over 100 new houses built in Glenrothes by autumn 2020.

“Fife Council is absolutely committed to meeting the housing needs of communities in Fife and proud to be delivering warmer, drier, healthier homes.

“The project is part of the much-needed high-quality council housing for people across Fife and our affordable housing programme is one of the biggest in Scotland.”

Ms Hamilton said the programme was also about providing jobs and apprenticeships and supporting the Fife economy and the construction industry.
