A car passenger pulled on the handbrake during a journey, causing a child in the vehicle to be injured.

Former soldier James Roberts, from Dysart, pulled the handbrake on as the car was being driven by a woman in Dunfermline, causing her to lose control. He was angry when she received a message on her phone.

Roberts also stalked the woman, loitering near her home and bombarding her with around 200 unwanted phone calls and a large number of text messages.

Roberts, 34, of Cook Street, Dysart, was jailed when he appeared for sentencing at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He previously admitted between May 1 and 14 at various locations in Dunfermline he engaged in conduct which caused the woman fear or alarm by approaching her, contacting her by telephone, social media and texts, loitered outside her home, monitored her, requested that she tell him her whereabouts and restricted her from socialising.

He also admitted on April 17, at Pittsburgh Road, Dunfermline, during the course of a car journey and whilst the vehicle was in motion, he applied the handbrake causing the woman to lose control of the car and causing a seatbelt to tighten on the neck of a child passenger to their injury.

Solicitor Ian Beatson said his client was a former soldier and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

He asked for him to be considered for the Caledonian Project which tries to educate domestic abusers.

However, Sheriff Alastair Brown jailed Roberts for 10 months and imposed a five-year non-harassment order.
