A Fife wedding dress designer who co-ordinated a national effort to make 10,000 sets of scrubs for the NHS has now turned her hand to face masks.
Mirka Jankowska set up the Facebook page “For The Love Of Scrubs” and enlisted 400 volunteer machinists to run up uniforms for frontline health workers across Scotland.
The 47-year-old had to close her Kirkcaldy bridal shop when the lockdown came into force in March, but wanted to use her skills to help others.
She made 70 sets of scrubs herself and helped ensure all 10,000 were distributed to hospitals across the country.
Now that all the orders have been fulfilled, Mirka is making cotton, reusable face masks, which are benefiting good causes.
Along with a number of colourful prints, she designed a black mask with the word smile written on it.
For every one of those sold, she donated a child’s mask to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.
Mirka’s daughter Maja said the hospital now had enough and they were seeking another cause to donate to.
Working from her own shop, Mirka Bridal Couture in Commercial Street, she has already had dozens of orders.
“She’s set up a website and has already sold more than 250,” said Maja.
“She also had an order from a company for 2,000, which she has finished.
“We’re trying to find out if there are any other places in need because the hospital has said it doesn’t need any more.”
Maja said she had not expected For The Love Of Scrubs to become so big.
“We ended up making more than 10,000 scrubs,” she said.
“We donated them to hospitals from the Highlands to the Borders, which was incredible.
“It turned into a full-blown production line and one of the hardest jobs was co-ordinating it all.
“There are no big orders anymore as the NHS seems to have caught up and we’ve filled the gap that there was but if anybody contacts the Facebook group and says they’re looking for scubs we’ll post them out.”
