A Fife single parent charity has opened a new lunch club to help families cope throughout the summer holidays.

Fife Gingerbread said the scheme, which meets every Tuesday afternoon at St Columba’s Church in Glenrothes, would provide friendship and a chance to communicate with support workers, as well as a healthy meal and activities for children.

The organisation said it wanted to be there to help people emerge from lockdown after adapting the ways it provided its services over the last few months.

Ten new babies have been born during the lockdown to mothers involved in Fife Gingerbread’s Teen Parent Project but support workers have been unable to visit the new mums.

However, the charity has used methods such as Facebook, Zoom coffee groups, phone calls and snapchat to keep in touch with families when they could not meet face to face.

Staff have learned Tik-Tok dances, read stories and sent out cooking videos, while bikes and school equipment have been sourced and families have been directed to the financial support they need.

A spokesperson said: “It’s a new way or working, but some things remain the same – the love between our charity and the people we help.”
