Fifteen stretches of Fife coastline have been awarded the newly launched Scotland’s Beach Award.

Environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful has recognised beaches across the country for the high standard of facilities they provide to visitors.

The beaches in Fife selected for the award were Aberdour’s Black Sands and Silver Sands, Billowness in Anstruther, Burntisland, Crail Roome Bay, Elie’s Ruby Bay and Harbour Beach, Kinghorn Harbour and Pettycur Bay, Kingsbarns, Kirkcaldy Seafield and Pathhead, Leven and finally St Andrews’ East and West Sands.

Stephen Carter from Fife Coast and Countryside Trust said: “This is great news for Fife and demonstrates how having well-managed beaches, and by putting in the investment and time into the Fife coastline, it pays dividends in terms of national awards and visitor numbers.

“The Fife Coastal Path and its many award beaches are one of the biggest draws for Fife and the east of Scotland. It’s what brings people to Fife, and once they are here they often return year on year.”

Derek Robertson, chief executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “This brand new award focuses on the local environmental quality of Scotland’s beaches – from litter free sand to the provision of information for visitors.

“Beaches are an important asset to communities and their economies.”
