Arwen hits hard: Pictures as storm batters Tayside and Fife

Post Thumbnail

Storm Arwen has unleashed ferocious wind and rain across Tayside and Fife.

Drivers were warned they “should not travel under any circumstances” after the storm was upgraded to a red “risk to life” level on Friday.

The east coast of Scotland has been one of the areas worst affected by Storm Arwen, with scores of routes closed by fallen trees. Bus and rail services have also been decimated.

Exposed rural areas have been particularly hard hit but damage has also occurred in built-up areas. Forecasters expected the storm to die down in the early hours of Saturday.

Here is a selection of images showing the disruption in parts of Courier country. Follow Storm Arwen live updates here.

Caravan calamity in Douglas

A caravan overturned and came to rest in a garden in Ballater Place, in Douglas, Dundee. A post on Facebook entitled “I’m declaring myself the winner of ‘What’s Landed in my Garden 2021’ was shared thousands of times. Photos: Blair Dingwall/DCT Media

Driving dangers

Police Scotland urged drivers in the red zone to stay off the roads. Countless reports of fallen trees across the region, such as here outside Piperdam, underlined the danger. Photo: Kim Cessford/DCT Media
Lawside Avenue in Dundee was also blocked by a fallen tree. Photo: Blair Dingwall/DCT Media
Many routes in Fife were also blocked. People came out to try to clear the Dysart to Wemyss road in Fife. Photo: Fife Jammer Locations
A large tree also fell victim to the wind, blocking the B961 Drumsturdy Road in Angus. Photo: Mike Fallone
Back in Dundee, the Honda showroom in Broughty Ferry has some repairs of its own ahead after the wind blasted through its MoT testing station door. Photo: Mark Asquith/DCT Media

Snow for some

Tayside and Fife did escape the worst of the wintry conditions. However, there were some spells of sleet during the day on Friday leading to tricky driving conditions here on the Carnoustie to Forfar Road. Photo: Emma-Jane Smith.

And finally….

What would a storm photo round-up be without the obligatory trampoline pic? We saw many tonight, but honourable mention goes to this one in Harefield Road, Dundee, which was doing its best to make its way into the city centre for a big night out. Photo: Blair Dingwall/DCT Media
