A Fife garage that was once dubbed Scotland’s most expensive has increased its diesel price to more than £2 per litre.

Shocked motorists shared an image of the price board at Bawbee Service Station in Methil on Tuesday night showing diesel at £2.01.9 per litre.

Those filling up with unleaded at the Shell branded fuel station meanwhile were paying £1.94.9 at the time the picture was taken.

But the price has reportedly risen even further since.

Asked for the updated rate on Wednesday morning, the garage’s manager told The Courier it was now selling diesel for £2.05 and petrol for £1.95 a litre.

It is believed to be the highest priced fuel of any garage in Fife and compared with an average pump price of £1.92.48 in the UK on Tuesday.

Nearby garages were charging under £2 per litre for diesel, according to data from petrolprices.com.

The price comparison app shows the Tesco garage in Methil was charging £1.88.9 per litre on June 14 while the Jet filling station was charging £1.91.9.

It comes amid the rising cost of living for people in the Kingdom and across Scotland, with fuel prices only expected to rise according to the RAC.

Data shows the nearby Sainsbury’s garage is charging £1.90.9 for diesel on Wednesday and £1.84.9 for unleaded.

Shell have been approached for comment.

Local councillor Colin Davidson says it is those who can least afford it who will be most affected by the rising price.

He urged fuel retailers to look at their “moral compass” and help communities where they can.

He said: “I don’t know how people are making ends meet. The people I think about are those in the care sector who need their cars to go back and forward and are on minimum wage.

“How they are managing to keep their jobs, I don’t know.

“If the fuel price continues to rise I don’t know how people will be getting to work. We are lucky it’s summer.”

The Fife councillor added: “Everybody is entitled to make money and run their business, but everyone should be taking the effort to support the community.

“I’d be looking at my profit margins and thinking that if I can manage on a wee bit less then that’s what I’d aim to do.

“Retailers have a moral obligation to support the wider community that supports them on a day-to-day basis.”
