Two hardy Fife police officers will brave the famous Limekilns breakfast dip on New Year’s Day to support families affected by the fire at Cairneyhill Primary School.
PCs Ian Fraser and Kev Chandler, who are the local police community ward officers for the south west Fife villages, were devastated to see the damage caused by the blaze which swept through the infant school building on December 8.
As a result, the pair have decided to swap their police uniforms for a pair of swimming shorts and goggles when they wade into the freezing Forth on January 1 to raise cash for Cairneyhill pupils.
Mr Fraser said: “We know the headteacher very well, we’ve done various assemblies and we’ve been made very welcome at the school, so when we heard what happened we wanted to do something to help.
“The kids were upset, the teachers were upset, so we thought this would be a good opportunity to support the local community.
“It’s such a shock to lose your school in such a way, but the teachers have been fantastic. We just wanted to show that as a police force we care about the community and Cairneyhill Primary is a great example of a community school.”
The Limekilns breakfast dip will take place at 2pm on January 1 and all participants pay a fee to aid the rebuilding of the local pier.
Local Scout groups will also be there to sell hot rolls and hot drinks to those taking part to thaw the participants out.
All the money raised by the intrepid PCs, who cover from Pattiesmuir all the way to Kincardine, will go straight to the Cairneyhill Primary School Parent Council
However, it will be a bit of a wake-up call for the duo as they will be entering the water after a backshift the night before.
“2018 is the year of young people, so what better way to start than by supporting the children and community of Cairneyhill Primary who have shown great spirit in supporting each other,” Mr added.
