Plans to transform Dunfermline street into version of Glasgow’s Ashton Lane

Dunfermline Delivers has been shortlisted for a prestigious FutureTown design competition.

Run by Scotland’s Future Towns Partnerships, the contest is aimed at stimulating conversations, provoking ideas and encouraging new approaches to towns.

The winner is chosen by the public. Concepts are submitted to help gauge the community’s interest.

Dunfermline Delivers submitted the idea for a covered area in a pedestrianised Bruce Street.

The area would be able to host events and markets, without being weather-dependent.

In the long term, the vision is to create a space similar to Glasgow’s Ashton Lane.

BID manager for Dunfermline Delivers Lisa Edwards said: “We’re asking our community to vote for Dunfermline.

“We’re up against different areas in Scotland and it would be brilliant for the town to win this.

“Ambitious ideas like this require business and local authority engagement, long term investment, time and commitment.”

She said the town had already seen how successful projects can be.

The award winning £12 million Dunfermline Carnegie Library and Galleries attracted 195,000 visitors in its first year, community-led Fire Station Creative has achieved a national profile and the Outwith Arts Festival is growing year on year.

“Winning best future town design would be a coup for the town but then it would require detailed consultation with the businesses before it’s taken any further,” Lisa added.

Since its inception the competition has showcased a variety of innovative yet practical ideas promoting change in areas such as the local environment, sustainable living, digital technologies, tourism, arts and culture, history and heritage, and health and wellbeing.

Last year’s winner, Paisley Community Trust, captured public attention with its proposal for a new cultural and creative quarter in the town centre.

Dunfermline residents are being asked to help their town to win this national competition by voting for the Bruce Street idea at https://www.scotlandstowns.org/future_town_design_comp_2018.
