Engineers assessing building safety after lorry crashes into Fife shop

Police seal off the area around the shop after a lorry struck the rear of McColls of Methil.
Police seal off the area around the shop after a lorry struck the rear of McColls of Methil.

Structural engineers are assessing the safety of a building in Fife after a reversing lorry took a sizeable chunk out of a wall.

Police were called to McColl’s convenience store in Wellesley Road, Methil, at around 8.30am on Tuesday morning after a delivery vehicle struck the rear of the shop which backs on to Bowling Green Street.

Officers cordoned off the affected area and a police truck was seen blocking the entrance to the one-way system in Bowling Green Street as a precaution.

Part of a wall to the rear of the building is understood to have collapsed in the incident.

No-one was hurt, but Fife Council is understood to have been contacted and is taking the lead on further structural assessments to see what action needs to be taken.

Scott Davidson, public safety lead professional surveyor, said: “Our engineers are on site and we’re awaiting a contractor with specialist equipment to fully assess the damage.

“Bowling Green Street will remain closed until the assessment’s completed and we can be sure there’s no danger to the public from potentially loose brickwork.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police in Fife were called to a premises in Wellesley Road, Methil, around 8.30am on Tuesday January 8 following a report that a vehicle was involved in a minor collision with a building.

“Damage was then found to the building and the road has been closed while this is assessed.”

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident should contact Police Scotland on 101.
