A Fife community is mourning the loss of one of its most popular characters.
Tributes have been pouring in for Buckhaven man Craig Bernard, regarded as a friend by local people who praised his cheery nature and referred to him as a Buckhind legend.
The 45-year-old delivered newspapers in the town and rarely passed anyone without stopping for a chat.
He is survived by his mum Linda Duffy and younger brother Ross, who said they had been overwhelmed by the number of kind messages left for them.
Friends, shocked by his sudden death on Tuesday, have already planned a candlelit vigil in his honour.
Anyone who knew Craig is invited to attend the event at Leven Promenade at 6pm on Monday, and is asked to take flowers or football memorabilia in the colours of East Fife or Rangers, his favourite teams.
Buckhaven people are also being canvassed by the community council on an appropriate tribute to him in his home town.
A keen sportsman, Craig was a member of Disability Sport Fife (DSF) where he took part in a number of disciplines with great enthusiasm.
DSF chairman Richard Brickley said: “Fife has lost one of its most charismatic athlete members.
“There are few better-known members in our movement and the quality and quantity of comments on social media are a clear indication of the extent of his social circle and the affection so many people had for him.
“Craig served DSF well for many years and his enthusiasm for all sports was unique.”
Mr Brickley said Craig was an accomplished middle distance and cross country runner and bowler, as well as a table tennis, basketball and badminton player.
“Our thoughts are with Craig’s family and friends during this period of significant loss,” he said.
“There will never be another Craig Bernard.”
Windygates Bowling Club, where Craig was also a member, also paid tribute to him, saying: “It’s fair to say Craig had the ability to bring joy to everyone he met.
“He was a real character and will be missed.”
Craig’s mum, Linda, said: “I would like to thank everyone from the community for their kind words.
“I am really proud of my son and how he has touched the lives of so many”
He will also be missed by his aunt and uncle, Ann and Thomas Cook, and by his cousins, Cheryl, Maxine and Tammie.
