Motorists’ lives are being put in danger by thugs launching missiles at passing vehicles from a bridge spanning the A92 in Fife, the Courier can reveal.
In two separate incidents, vehicles have been hit with stones thrown by youths off a bridge close to Cardenden.
One driver, Kelly Lindsay, heavily pregnant at the time, was left in shock after her car was hit by an item while travelling from her home in Edinburgh to Kirkcaldy.
She said: “I was driving back along the A92 from Edinburgh, heading for Kirkcaldy, when suddenly there was a loud bang of something hitting the car.
“It was a large stone of some sort hit my window. It was that loud it gave me a fright and I thought instantly it wasn’t a stone from the road – it came from above and we had just passed a flyover.
“My brother was travelling with me at the time and he is a mechanic and he said it was definitely thrown from above.
“We’re very lucky that whatever was thrown didn’t come through the window and that it wasn’t more serious, as I was heavily pregnant and actually went into early labour few hours after the incident.”
Another driver, who asked not to be named, said he narrowly missed being hit in a similar incident just two days later on Friday, October 4.
“I was driving along the A92 at around 6.30pm and saw kids throwing things at cars on the Cardenden flyover.
“They just missed my car. I tried to call the police on 101 but couldn’t get through.”
The reckless actions have been roundly condemned by SNP Cardenden Councillor Lea McClelland, who said whoever is responsible must be stopped.
She added: “This is a very serious situation, these idiots are endangering the lives of every motorist on the A92.
“It’s hard to believe anyone could be so stupid, this behaviour has the potential to be catastrophic.
“Drivers have already had a lucky escape but it could quite easily have been a serious accident or even worse.
“I urge anyone who knows who is responsible or sees anyone acting suspiciously to reported without delay.
“This can’t be allowed to continue.”
A spokesman for Police Scotland urged anyone who thought they had been involved in such incidents to report it by calling 101.
