Angus Provost and retired Black Watch Major Ronnie Proctor has shared his sadness that coronavirus forced the cancellation of events to mark the 75th anniversary of VE DAY.
The Kirriemuir and Dean Conservative councillor said: “As a proud former soldier, I am devastated that I am unable to perform my duties by attending some of the many events that were planned to celebrate this important 75th anniversary of VE Day.”
Following a military career of 40 years’ service, Major Proctor retains strong ties to the Black Watch family as the secretary of the regimental association.
He added: “Out of respect to the many who gave their lives, and in gratitude to those who survived all conflicts, I wanted to mark this day in my own garden, and I can assure everyone in Angus that as soon as I am able to responsibly do so, I will be laying this wreath at the war memorial at The Cross in Forfar.
“In the meantime, as someone who is the wrong side of the 70 years plus, I will be following the shielding guideline and staying at home.
“I will be marking the day by observing the two minutes’ silence at 11am and making some personal reflections on my own time in the forces.
“I wish everyone well and hope that they stay safe,” said Major Proctor.
