A group of Travellers have set up an illegal encampment on the grounds of Stracathro Hospital near Brechin.

NHS Tayside is taking legal advice after five caravans and several other vehicles pitched up in the hospital grounds.

The site at the back of an overspill car park is opposite the surgical ward and next to the Susan Carnegie Centre.

The Susan Carnegie Centre currently houses three inpatient mental health units, a mental health day unit and associated supporting clinicians and staff.

An NHS Tayside spokesperson confirmed that the health board is taking “appropriate legal advice” to deal with the issue.

A similar illegal encampment in Forfar is being monitored through the legal process by Angus Council.

The Travellers in Forfar moved to a new site in the east end of the town having being evicted from a site at the west end.

The new site at St Margaret’s Park has impacted Forfar Farmington Football club who had to reschedule matches at the weekend.

The club was forced to rearrange four games which should have been played at Whitehills on Saturday.

Training sessions were also cancelled as there was no room for people to park and the club didn’t want to risk a child being bitten by a dog.

The Travellers have been accused of playing a game of cat and mouse with the council in Forfar.

This year they set up camp at the football pitch at the Lochside and were evicted from there.

From there they moved to Threewells before being evicted and now are at St Margaret’s.
