Historic vessel the Reaper swept over at Johnshaven festival

An ancient fishing vessel was blown over during a festival celebrating the maritime heritage of Johnshaven.

A crew member was taken to hospital after the 70-foot Reaper was swept over by wind and partially submerged in the empty harbour on Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to the harbour during the Johnshaven Fish Festival and the lifeboat was scrambled to help the man to safety.

Fire crews were on site pumping water out of the boat for most of the day but attempts to help refloat the vessel were unsuccessful.

It is not known how long she will remain in the harbour.

The village, once one of the foremost fishing communities in Scotland, attracted visitors from all over the east coast to enjoy its art, music and food.

The Howe O’ The Mearns Pipe Band opened the festival whose star attraction was a visit from the herring drifter from Anstruther.

The vessel underwent a refit in 2004 and was turned into a museum ship.

Before the event, Johnshaven Fish Festival Management Group member Graeme Anderson said: “It is a fun day out for everyone and for a small fishing village to get to its 20th festival is a major feat.

“It means a lot to the management group.

“The Reaper is a major attraction for a lot of festivals and it is very hard to get a hold of.”
