More unexploded bombs found near Montrose

A further cache of unexploded bombs have been discovered hidden in the sand at Lunan Bay near Montrose.

Police are in attendance after the corroded devices were found washed up close to the Redcastle farm estate around 2pm on Friday.

They were found just 24 hours after two devices were found at the same spot on Thursday which were blown up by bomb disposal experts.

The unexploded devices were stumbled across by the same person who found Thursday’s shells – local resident David Mackay.

He said: “I found another four less than 10 metres from the ones on Thursday.

“I was a bit shocked to see them sticking out the sand.

“As I said, they were obviously a cluster but I would have thought the army would have checked the immediate vicinity.”

A fifth device has also been found in the sand and a bomb disposal unit has been sent to Lunan Bay from the west coast to carry out a controlled explosion.

Although the explosives cannot be set off by a person walking over them, members of the public are urged not to touch or approach anything that looks suspicious.

Practice bombing missions were carried out right around the British coast during the Second World War.

Unexploded bombs have been found sporadically up and down the coast which were used in training in defined areas at Tentsmuir, Ladybank and Lunan Bay.
