A pensioner who took a “funny turn” and fell on to a road in Montrose has thanked the emergency services and others who came to her aid.

Freda Newlands is now recovering at home after the incident, which has left her face severely bruised.

Hume Street in Montrose was closed for a short time on Monday morning while the 73-year-old received medical attention from paramedics.

Freda said: “I took a funny turn and fell at the top of Hume Street.

“When I take a turn, I just start running, which I can’t stop myself doing.

“I ended up in a heap on my face in the road.”

An ambulance was called just before 11am and police closed the road.

A member of staff from nearby clothing shop M&Co brought out a duvet to cover Freda as she lay on the road.

“I remember having everyone round me,” said Freda.

“The blood was just pouring out of my head.

“My head is all bruised. My face is all black and blue. My left eye was all closed — it only opened again on Wednesday. My glasses are knackered.

“There’s bruising on a bit of the body but it’s the face that’s worse.

“I was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and I got home at night time and I’m just recovering now. I don’t know why I have these turns.

“I had another turn last year on a back path near my house and I landed on a concrete ornament outside.”

Freda, who has always lived in Montrose and whose last job was working in Somerfield supermarket, contacted The Courier to express her gratitude to everyone who helped her.

“I would just like to thank everyone who helped — the staff at M & Co and the police and ambulance,” she said.

“My doctor also came round very quickly when he heard.

“I don’t know who called the ambulance and police but I’d just like to thank everyone involved. The staff at Ninewells were also excellent.”
