An elderly man who died following a road accident in Angus on Thursday has been named locally as Alfred Forbes.

Mr Forbes, known as Fred to many people in Brechin following a lengthy career as a businessman, was killed after the crash on the road to Edzell at Trinity.

Mr Forbes and his late wife Evelyn, or Evie, ran the town’s Savoy fish and chip shop in Market Street for many years before their retirement.

Police have still to formally announce Mr Forbes’ identity but it is understood his next of kin have been informed.

Mr Forbes’ son Derek posted on social media: “Thank you to everyone at this sad time for your kind words and thoughts of my dad Fred, Savoy.”

The accident happened around 11.50am on the B966.

A full-scale emergency response was scrambled following the accident which left a Toyota Rav4 on its roof.

Police, two fire appliances and an ambulance were in attendance.

Firefighters assisted in removing the man from the vehicle and he was handed into the care of paramedics.

It is understood the vehicle may have struck a dyke but enquiries are ongoing to establish the full set of circumstances.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact 101.

Members of the public posted tributes to Mr Forbes on the Brechin Memories Facebook page.

Neil Watson wrote: “Great memories of the Savoy and of Fred.”

“I worked at the Savoy when I was a young lass, my thoughts and prayers are with his family,” commented Amanda Parrish.

Irene Hart wrote: “(The) chippy was my very first job.

“Fred and Evie were a lovely couple.”

Maureen Strachan commented: “Sad news about Fred — best chippy in town his chips were great. Thoughts go out to his family at this sad time.”
