“There are a lot of angry people around here” — Tyre slashers cause thousands of pounds of damage in Montrose

Police are scouring CCTV after a tyre-slashing spree in Montrose caused thousands of pounds of damage.

Officers believe around 30 vehicles were damaged in the latest attack centred on the Caledonian Place and Baltic Street area in the early hours of Tuesday.

Some vehicles had all of their tyres slashed and individual bills are likely to exceed £500 after prestige marques including Audi, Mercedes and Jaguar were targeted.

One resident captured CCTV footage which he believes may show the people who carried out the vandalism.

He told The Courier his neighbours’ cars were damaged in the spree and he has made the police aware of his footage.

It follows a similar incident where car tyres were vandalised in New Wynd and Bents Road in Montrose over the weekend of December 17/18.

Rugby development officer James Sadio was shocked to find both his Ford Kuga and partner Natalie Matthew’s Volkswagen Polo had been damaged.

“I’ve had to order new tyres for my car and be without it for a few days. It’s just as well I am on time off or that could have caused me problems.

“I came out yesterday morning and thought I just had a puncture,  but then I saw both were flat and Natalie’s had been done too.”

“There were tons of cars all the way along the street, one person round the corner had all four done on their car.”

“I’ll just have to cough up for it just now but I am still looking at about £350. It’s pretty annoying, there are a lot of pretty angry people around here just now, especially for it to happen just after Christmas,” he said.

The CCTV supplied to police by the local resident suggests the slashings happened just before 1.30am and James, 25, believes he may have even heard those responsible.

“I did hear voices outside, but you quite often get that at weekends when the pubs are closing and people make their way through this area.

“If I’d seen them doing it I might have gone out and confronted them, but sometimes that isn’t the best thing to do.”

A spokesman said: “Police Scotland is appealing for information to assist in tracing the person or persons responsible for vandalising the tyres of around 30 vehicles in the area of Baltic Street, Montrose, in the early hours of Tuesday December 27.

“Thousands of pounds worth of damage has been caused and officers continue to trace owners of vehicles that have been targeted.

“Drivers in the area are asked to check their vehicles and report any vandalisms to police.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or speak to an officer.
