A local man has appeared in court charged with robbing an OAP in Montrose a week before Christmas.

Joseph Rizza, 57, made a private appearance at Forfar sheriff court on Friday on a petition alleging robbery.

The accused, from Montrose, made no plea or declaration and was committed for further examination.

Rizza was granted bail ahead of a further appearance in court on a date yet to be scheduled.

His arrest followed an investigation into the broad daylight incident involving an 88-year-old woman in Newhame Road, Montrose on the morning of Saturday December 17.

The victim was left shaken but unhurt after she fell to the ground during the robbery.

Police carried our door to door enquiries in the Borrowfield area and examined private CCTV footage as part of the probe,

They also issued a description of a man wanted in connection with the alleged offence.

Following the incident, local councillor Bill Duff said he was “absolutely shocked” by what happened.

“For an elderly person to be robbed in a quiet residential area of Montrose is very unusual and worrying he said.”

Fellow Montrose councillor Paul Valentine said: “We tend to think that we are pretty safe in Montrose and that these kind of things happen elsewhere.

“Most people know each other in the Borrowfield area. It is a pretty tight-knit community and you don’t hear of these kind of reports coming up too often.”

Police carried our door to door enquiries in the locality and examined private CCTV footage as part of the probe,

Police Scotland have thanked the public for their assistance in the matter.
