An Angus couple who have helped their community for almost 40 years are asking for a little help to fight cancer in return.
Ed and Geraldine Williams from Brechin are both paramedics and have been helping those in need for 37 years between them.
But Geraldine found she had to call on the assistance of the NHS when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in April last year.
Geraldine, 43, and Ed, 44, recognise the support she and her family received and wants to be sure it will continue to be available to all families facing any type of cancer in Tayside.
The pair have planned a 24-hour “cutathon” haircutting session that will give something back to charity and the local cancer ward.
Geraldine said: “It was difficult being on the receiving end of care from the NHS, but it just highlighted how wonderful everyone is.
“Ed and I are so grateful that we decided to fundraise for some of the amazing people involved along our journey.”
Friend Marie Church has organised the fundraiser at her Brechin salon, Grum’d, from noon on January 28 to 29.
Geraldine attended a “look good, feel better” course at Maggie’s Centre and thought it fitting for fundraising to be on that theme.
She said: “It is a phenomenal offer from Marie and her colleague Linda Cook.
“I’ll be there making copious amounts of coffee and sweeping the floor.”
Men and women are invited to pop in for a trim in exchange for a donation.
All money raised will be divided between Maggie’s Centre and the comfort fund for Ward 32 at Ninewells Hospital.
Jeff and Andrew of City Press in Brechin have supplied posters and flyers.
Brechin City FC vice-chairman and safety officer Martin Smith and Gary Ross were quick to champion the cause.
Mr Ross said the club was the only one apart from Barcelona to have a charity’s name on their strip in 2012, Cancer Research.
“We are a community club and are happy to support anything the charity is doing,” he said.
“We hosted the Moon Walk this year at Glebe Park, and it was a fabulous night.
“We will do it again this year and it will be even bigger.”
The fundraising will continue in May when Geraldine, Marie and Geraldine’s sons Corey, 15, and 11-year old Gabriel climb Ben Nevis, and Ed takes part in the Etape Caledonia 81-mile road bike race at Pitlochry.
