New Arbroath primaries proposals welcomed

The digital strategy will come back to council in the near future.
The digital strategy will come back to council in the near future.

Arbroath councillor Alex King has hailed proposals to build two new primary schools in the town.

Hayshead Primary and Muirfield Primary would be replaced with new schools at the site of the old buildings.

Councillors on the development standards committee were told a Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) has been submitted in respect of the plan.

“I’d just like to welcome these applications which indicates the commitment by this council to provide modern 21st century buildings so that the children can attain the best they possibly can in primary schools.

“We’ve seen two new primary schools already being built in Arbroath and we’ve seen two new secondary schools being built in Forfar and Brechin.

“Now we are bringing forward proposals for another three, of which two are listed in these reports today.

“I think this is a wonderful achievement over the period of this council and that will continue into the period of the next council.

“We want these schools to built as quickly as we possibly can.”

The replacement educational facilities would include a primary school, early years centre, community facility, energy centre, parking and associated playground areas.

The new facilities would be built at the site of the existing schools and will go out to community consultation once the full application is lodged.

The proposed development site at the existing Hayshead Primary School at St Abbs Road measures 2.7 hectares.

The proposed development site at Muirfield Primary School measures 2.23 hectares and currently consists of the site of the existing primary school.

At this time confirmation was also given that neither planning application could be submitted prior to March 22 which is 12 weeks from the submission of the PAN.

The PAN has been submitted to Arbroath Community Council and a public exhibition is scheduled to take place later this month although the venue is still to be confirmed.

While both sites are not specifically allocated in the Angus Local Development Plan, the existing school playing fields are deemed as protected open spaces.
