A controlled explosion was carried out on Sunday morning following the discovery of two unexploded ordinance devices on Elliot beach near Arbroath.

Arbroath, Montrose and Carnoustie Coastguard rescue teams were initially tasked to investigate and locate a device on Saturday evening before requesting the assistance of the Army EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal).

A cordon and exclusion zone was put in place while a number of officers performed a search of the surrounding area, where later a second device was located.

The cordon remained in place for most of the night until 6.20am when the devices were disposed of by means of a controlled explosion.

Police, Coastguard and RNLI assets were also called to the Deil’s Head area of Arbroath, north of Victoria Park, after local man Kevin Menzies, 28, was reported missing at 8.20pm on Saturday.

The Arbroath RNLI inshore lifeboat also assisted.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Kevin was last seen at about 8pm in the Arbroath area and was wearing a burgundy bomber-style jacket, white long-sleeved top, dark blue jeans and black trainers.

“Kevin is 28 years old, six feet tall, medium build and has an earring in his left ear.

“He has strawberry blonde hair and beard.

“Anyone with information which may assist in tracing Kevin should telephone 101.”
