Angus MP slams ‘cynical scaremongering’ as she confirms assurances given over RM Condor

An Angus MP says she has been given an assurance by the UK Government over the future of RM Condor.

The base’s future was on the agenda of a high-level Holyrood meeting late last year to thrash out deals over MOD estate across Courier Country.

Under the Angus proposals, some 2,500 homes and other industrial facilities could be constructed.

The RM Condor base has had the threat of closure hanging over it since 2004.

Conservative MP Kirstene Hair said the Government “took the right decision to conduct a new defence review”.

Speaking in the Commons, Ms Hair said: “I hope that it will lay the groundwork for a well-funded, well-equipped military that is fit for all the challenges that the future might bring.

“I firmly believe that the RM Condor base in Angus must be part of that future.

“RM Condor and the Royal Marines of 45 Commando who serve there are a valued part of Angus’ community and economy, and moreover, through their skills and professionalism, they also help keep this entire country safe.

“I am glad, therefore, to have been assured that RM Condor will remain an integral part of our defence capability.

“RM Condor is good value for money, and I am pleased that this Government recognises that.

“Cynical scaremongering about the future of the base by some in the SNP does nobody any good and serves only to cause unnecessary anxiety for service personnel and their families.”

It is understood MOD chiefs are preparing to decontaminate and hand over the former airfield at the Angus base after declaring it surplus to requirements.

Ms Hair said: “It is important that 45 Commando continues to have the necessary facilities at RM Condor, and while there are ongoing discussions over the base’s airfield, this review must be conducted in such a way that does not detrimentally effect work at RM Condor.

“Currently, the airfield offers training facilities both for their in house rifle range and an incredibly impressive indoor facility for urban combat drills that they built themselves inside one of the old aircraft hangars.

“It would be foolish to divest so much of the airfield that 45 Commando was unable to utilise these resources and have to travel to alternative ranges for training.

“This question can — and must — be resolved in a way that works for RM Condor and Angus as a whole.”
