Angus school pupils have grasped the opportunity to get their hands on the famous Claret Jug ahead of this summer’s Open Championship at Carnoustie.

Brechin High School pupils were the latest from Tayside and Fife to get up close to the famous trophy as part of a Road to the Open tour run by the R&A and Scottish golf.

The tour forms part of a drive to inspire youngsters to get into golf at school and boost junior membership at local clubs.

It is also being used to promote The Open’s ‘kids go free’ initiative which enables children aged 16 and under to attend the championship free-of-charge under a scheme run by the R&A since 2004.

Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, executive director of championships at The R&A, said: “There are few sports events around the world where young fans can get so close to the star names and be inspired by their heroes and we look forward to welcoming them to Carnoustie in July for what is set to be an exciting occasion.”
