SPONSORED: Lathallan offers inspiring education to all

Lathallan is the small Aberdeenshire coastal school that provides a unique and inspiring education for its 200 junior and senior, day and boarding pupils.

Just 100 metres from the North Sea, the 19th century Brotherton Castle in Johnshaven boasts extensive grounds and small class sizes as it inspires pupils to achieve their full potential.

Here are five reasons why you should consider a Lathallan education for your child.

  1. Small Class Sizes

With an average class size of just 12, there are unique opportunities for individualised support for all Lathallan pupils than is often on offer at other schools.

Pupils at Lathallan are inspired to achieve their full potential through direct, one-to-one support from their teachers.

“Being in a small class at Lathallan has really helped me,” said current pupil Tim Brown who secured eight As at Nat 5 in 2018 and is a current Scotland Under-16 rugby international.

“In other schools where there are 30 or more in a class you don’t get the same level of attention to help you succeed.”

  2. Inspiring Location

Lathallan is situated in an stunning Aberdeenshire coastal location between Montrose and Stonehaven.

The 19th century Brotherton Castle boasts unspoiled views across the North Sea and is set within idyllic wooded grounds that lend themselves to highly engaging outdoor lessons.

“We have the most magical grounds here and it inspires our pupils to learn outside,” said Junior School teacher Derek Jamieson. “I always find they learn better when I take them to the ‘great outdoors’.”

  3. Fantastic Outdoor Learning

Lathallan leads the way on outdoor education as the number one independent school in Scotland for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for the last five years, with the highest percentage of sign-up and completion at all levels of D of E.

This fact was not lost on Education Scotland who, in stated in a recent inspection report that Lathallan provides “a rich and engaging learning environment beyond the school classroom”.

  4. New State-of-the-Art Science Centre

Lathallan is training the scientists of tomorrow in a new modern, fully-equipped science centre.

Lathallan pupil Clarence Wei is aiming for a career in medicine having gained five As at Higher level in 2018.

He said: “The size and quality of the science centre is amazing and there is a vast array of equipment to work with on experiments which has helped me achieve the grades I need to study medicine.”

  5. Sporting Success

Lathallan boasts a wealth of sporting talent, with over 20 per cent of the school population competing at regional or national level for sport.

With Scottish champions across several individual sports, including swimming, shot put and laser run, Lathallan also excels in team sports.

Last year Lathallan’s netball team claimed two national titles  – winning the Scottish Schools Cup at both S2 Bronze level and Senior Open Silver tournament.

“The number of Lathallan pupils performing at a high level in sport and representing their country is mind-boggling so the school is clearly doing something right,” said current World Silver Medallist 4×400 metre athlete Zoey Clark.
