Services between Angus and Dundee have been cancelled due to a broken down train.

Journeys were called off between Aberdeen and the City of Discovery on Tuesday morning due to the issue which has left the line “blocked” at Arbroath.

Passengers were said to be stranded on board carriages between the two cities.

A rescue train was sent to the area.

Passengers as far away as Perth were affected and were offered bus journeys on to Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Replacement buses also took people affected from Aberdeen to Dundee and Perth.

Earlier ScotRail said: “Due to a broken down train at Arbroath the line towards Dundee is blocked.

“Train services running through this station will be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until 12pm.

“We have a broken down train at Arbroath which is blocking the line towards Dundee, we are unfortunately unable to overcome the fault and have an assisting train there to assist, however we are still experiencing problems and continue to work to get things on the move.”

UPDATE:

The broken down train was on the move as of 12.30pm.

The line has reopened, but ScotRail has warned of delays through Angus until 4pm.

ScotRail posted: “Following a broken down train earlier today at Arbroath the line towards Dundee has now reopened.

“Train services running through this station are returning to normal but some services will still be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until 4pm.”
