Police were forced to close an Angus road following reports of an explosive at a rural property on Thursday evening.

The B966 Brechin to Fettercairn road was shut from the Edzell Arch to Inchbare, with drivers diverted on to the Memus and Dunlappie roads, after a member of the public raised concerns around the items to the force.

The B966 was closed between Inchbare and Edzell.

A Tayside Police Division spokeswoman said officers originally received reports of a potentially unexploded ordnance device at Smiddy House, near Inchbare, at about 4.30pm.

The road was closed for several hours, with a British Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit made aware of the incident.

However it was soon declared a false alarm after the items were confirmed as empty casings.

The spokeswoman added: “The road was closed as a precaution. We got the call at 4.30pm.”

No properties are said to have been evacuated.

The EOD team did not attend the incident.

Earlier on Thursday evening, Tayside Police Division posted to Facebook: “Police Scotland are currently advising that the B966 at Inchbare is currently closed and drivers are being diverted to Memus Road and Dunlappie Road, Edzell.”

The Edzell Village Improvement Society posted: “The road is closed between the Arch at Edzell and Inchbare, traffic diverted via Dunlappie by Police Scotland.”
