A driver whose car dramatically flew into the air before crashing to the ground at a busy Dundee roundabout is being treated for serious spinal injuries.

A video which showed a silver Vauxhall come crashing to the ground and roll over three times before coming to a stop at the roundabout near the Struans garage on the southbound carriageway of the A90 went viral online.

Shocking video footage of airborne vehicle at busy Dundee roundabout

It is not clear from the video how the car became airborne, but a police spokesman described it as going “through a roundabout”.

No other vehicles are thought to have been involved in the incident.

It was previously thought the driver was uninjured, but it has since emerged this is not the case and the driver was taken to Ninewells Hospital with serious spinal injuries immediately after the incident.

Neither police, NHS Tayside or the Scottish Ambulance Service were able to say what condition the male driver is currently in.

It is understood that the injuries are serious, but not life threatening.

The clip posted on Facebook appears to be filmed on a mobile phone from a CCTV monitor.

The original footage appears to have been taken on CCTV cameras from nearby Struans car dealership.

A senior member of staff said they were carrying out an “internal investigation” into the matter but would not comment further.

When asked if the investigation was to ascertain who had released the footage or into the crash generally, the staff member said it was for “everything”.

A fire service spokesman said two appliances from the Kingsway attended and the driver was already out of the car by the time they had arrived.

“We administered first aid and he was then taken away by ambulance,” he said.

A force spokesman said: “Police were called around 3.05pm on Monday October 21 to the A90 near Emmock Park in Dundee, following a crash where a silver Vauxhall Astra went through a roundabout.

“Emergency services attended and the 42-year old male was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“There was debris on the road, which was cleared by 3.30pm. Enquiries remain ongoing.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We received a call to attend a road traffic collision on the A90 roundabout near Emmock Park.

“Two ambulances were dispatched and a male patient was taken to Ninewells Hospital.”

The video was initially post on Facebook page Tayside Mobile Speed Camera Locations, but has since been taken down as the moderator “was not aware it was a recent accident”.
