Motorists will face disruption on one of Broughty Ferry’s busiest streets throughout January amid planned work to refurbish a level crossing.
The old rails, ballast and level crossing surface at Gray Street will be replaced by new ones, with part of the street to be closed to traffic while the repairs are happening.
A section of Gray Street between Brook Street and Queen Street will be shut from 11pm on January 2 until 6am, on January 25.
There will also be restricted pedestrian access in the underpass, which will be closed between January 4 and January 6, and then again between January 11 and January 13.
Broughty Ferry councillor Craig Duncan said the work would particularly affect large vehicles, due to size and weight restrictions on alternative routes.
He added: “It’s quite a big job.
“The level crossing isn’t in an awful state, it’s just one of those routine maintenance jobs that needs done to make sure it all functions well – however, it will still take a while.
“There’s bound to be inconvenience as Gray Street is quite busy.
“You get traffic coming up from Queen Street, however, there are other ways in and out of Broughty Ferry, such as Fort Street and St Vincent Street.
“The only issue will be that tall and heavy vehicles might struggle, as the bridge on Fort Street isn’t the strongest and on St Vincent Street there are height restrictions.
“This work must be done though, it is essential.”
Some time next year there will also be work done on the level crossing underpass, which is in a poor state due to water ingress.
A gel injection will ensure the underpass is watertight, allowing it to be cleaned up.
However, dates for the work have not yet been revealed.
Network Rail have stated: “From January 2 2020, Network Rail will be carrying out essential engineering work at the level crossing in Broughty Ferry, Dundee.
“We will be completely renewing the level crossing, which involves removing the old rails, ballast and level crossing surface, and installing new ones.
“There will be pedestrian access under the railway using the underpass during most of the work. However for safety reasons, the underpass will be closed over two weekends.”
