The North Carr Lightship is set to be deconstructed after attempts to restore it to its former glory failed.

Fire crews were called to bail out a historic lightship at Dundee City Quay on Sunday.

The North Carr Lightship began taking on water on Sunday and fire crews were called out to pump water out of the vessel.

Firefighters arrived at Victoria Dock at 1.25pm and remained on site for just under an hour before volunteers from Tay Maritime Action took over.

Chairman Bob Richmond said they will plug the leak once they discover where it is and fire crews were only called as a precaution in case the pumps on board could not be started.

The North Carr – once operated by the Northern Lighthouse Board – was stationed off the North Carr rocks near Fife.

It remained in use until 1975 when it was moored in Anstruther and used as a museum.

It was bought for £1 in 2010 and brought to Dundee.

There are plans to restore the vessel.

This month saw the 60th anniversary of the Mona lifeboat disaster.

On December 8 1959, all hands were lost on the lifeboat after she was sent to assist the North Carr Lightship, which was adrift in St Andrews Bay.
