‘Amazing community’ aids Dundee businesses left in limbo following devastating fire

Several businesses have been left in limbo following the devastating blaze at a Chinese takeaway in Dundee at the weekend.

The fire took hold at China China on Clepington Road on Saturday and quickly spread to neighbouring businesses.

It is believed that no one was injured in the fire, which started off at around 11am, but the flames rapidly spread to a single storey row of shops, including a funeral directors and a barber shop.

Six individual businesses make up the row which is essentially one building separated by plasterboard walls.

The roof of the Chinese takeaway caved in as firefighters fought to contain the blaze, leaving a huge hole above China China and Affertons funeral directors.

Paul Craigie, a funeral director at Affertons, said the long-term impact the blaze will have on the business is still unknown.

He said: “We are just taking the wait and see approach as we still don’t really know what is going to happen yet.

“I have been overwhelmed with offers for support from other businesses, which shows how amazing this community is but for the moment we are having to just take it day by day.

“We are really thankful to the firefighters for acting so quickly as they succeeded in retrieving the cremated remains that were inside and that’s all we could have hoped for.

“We don’t know if we will have to move to a different location yet as it’s too soon to know the full extent of the damage with the investigation going on.

“Right now we are working from home and answering calls to clients and customers, so in that sense it’s still business as usual.”

The Ladbrokes bookmakers said a structural review is under way, meaning the store will be unable to open.

A spokesperson said: “Initial feedback suggests it is heavily smoke damaged but may not be structurally as bad as first feared. It is likely to be closed for several weeks.”

At its peak, 10 fire appliances were sent to the scene to deal with the incident, while police cordoned off the street from Provost Road to Graham Street.

Fire services and police are continuing enquiries to establish a cause.
