Armed police and negotiators sealed off an area of a busy Dundee road this weekend following reports of concerns for an individual.

Motorists on Broughty Ferry Road were turned away on Saturday afternoon as officers attended an incident in an area between the junction of Market Street and Dalkeith Road, near the Dundee Museum of Transport.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a large number of police vehicles and officers carrying firearms swarm the area shortly after 3pm as negotiators worked to bring the situation on the residential street under control.

A 35-year-old man was arrested at the scene and was later passed into the care of health professionals but shocked local residents said they were unaware what had sparked such a major response from officers.

It is understood the incident was mental health related but no further information has been made available about the condition of the man.

At least five police vehicles and a crew from the Scottish Ambulance Service were present at the scene and eyewitnesses reported an incident response unit remained at the location for around two hours.

One woman described how police and ambulance vehicles “flew past” her on Arbroath Road on the way to the scene, while another local resident said she witnessed at least five police vehicles arriving at the incident on Saturday.

One man described his shock at watching the situation unfold.

He said: “Police diverted us down Market Street. There was about five police officers that I could see. I just hope everyone living in that area is okay.”

Police Scotland were unable to provide further details of the incident on Saturday and were unable to confirm whether officers were still in attendance well into the evening.

The force later said Broughty Ferry Road was fully reopened and officers had left the scene by around 5pm on Saturday. It is not believed there was any wider risk to members of the public.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We were called to reports of concerns for a person in the Broughty Ferry Road area of Dundee at around 3pm on Saturday, January 11.

“A 35-year-old man was arrested and passed into the care of the NHS.”
