Two new post offices will open in Broughty Ferry next month following a period with a dearth of postal services in the area.
A new branch will open at The Corner Shop on Balgillo Road, at the junction with Forthill Road, within days of another post office opening at Zaveri’s newsagent’s in Abercromby Street.
The service at Balgillo Road will launch on February 13 while the one at Zaveri’s will be active from February 17.
Broughty Ferry councillor Craig Duncan, who has been campaigning for more postal services in the area, said it was “like waiting ages for a bus and then two arrive”.
He said: “I’m very pleased as it’s a vote of confidence in the Ferry, although I can’t take credit for the post office on Balgillo Road.
“I’ve been pushing for more provision in Barnhill, to replace the former facility on Campbell Square but only found out about this latest development on Friday.
“This one will be completely new as opposed to replacing a previous service – there’s never been a post office there before.
“This will give residents a very welcome provision of postal facilities at three different locations within Broughty Ferry.
“I don’t think they’ll have to compete for business as the facilities are quite far apart and will serve different ‘catchment areas’.
“The one on Balgillo Road will be convenient for people living north of Arbroath Road, where they’re building lots of houses.”
For more than a year residents have had to manage with just one post office for all of Broughty Ferry, located in Gray Street.
Postal services were left depleted following a fire at MS News in Campfield Square on October 31 2018.
Mr Duncan said he was hoping the post office on Gray Street would be able to attract an additional business to operate out of the premises.
He explained: “There used to be a NISA there but now it’s just a post office with a big empty space where a commercial unit could be.
“I’m hoping a business would move in. I think the days where you just have a stand-alone post office are gone.
“Most post offices now work in conjunction with a newsagent or other business.”
