Coronavirus: NHS workers ‘blown away’ by young neighbour’s heartwarming letters and notes

A mother and daughter working on the frontline against coronavirus were “blown away” when youngsters living in the neighbourhood posted thank you notes and hand made heart trinkets through their door.

Sandra Paterson, who lives in Kinross, came home after a shift last week to find letters and hand made hearts in rainbow colours, in reference to the drawings that have brighten up windows up and down the country.

The letters were addressed to Sandra and her daughter Laura, 24, who works in the acute medical unit at Perth Royal Infirmary.

The were accompanied by colourful heart-shaped beads made by sisters Megan and Libby Widley.

Sandra, 50, is a team leader for the health visiting service within NHS Fife’s children’s services.

The two letters, one addressed to Laura and the other to Sandra, were written by Megan, 16, after she and Libby, 11, decided what to say.

It lavished praise on the pair and explains that the heart-shaped beads are made to remind the health workers they are “special just like a rainbow”.

The letters suggest the rainbow hearts are kept in Sandra and Laura’s pockets “when you’re looking after the poorly people, so it will keep you safe”.

Sandra said: “We’re very touched by it.

“It was such a beautiful, kind gesture from the sisters in recognition of the work we do on the frontline every day.

“My daughter and I were brought to tears by the thoughtfulness of the kind words.

“We feel very humbled and valued by the kind words ‘you are special’.

“I have spoken to their mum and she tells me it was their own idea. It was so thoughtful and it was something they wanted to do.

“The fact that they have taken time to create something is really special. We’re blown away by the gesture.

“Although, like all of our colleagues within the NHS, we don’t consider ourselves to be special. We are just doing the job we love which allows us to care for people and touch people’s lives at a time when they are most vulnerable.

“They’ve spread a little joy in this challenging climate with the lockdown. We are seeing the best in some people.”
