Firms are pulling together to help serve up hot meals and treats for the vulnerable and elderly in Dundee.

Contract catering company Thomas Franks Scotland will be preparing, cooking and packing fresh meals at St Leonards School in St Andrews for deliver to projects in Dundee and the Lothians.

The Feeding Communities team will be helping the Transform Community in Dundee, an organisation which provides temporary support and accommodation and gives vulnerable people opportunities to change their lives through skills development of skills, as well as the city’s St Mary’s Community Trust, who are part of the Rank foundation in Dundee.

The initiative is also supporting Homestart East Lothian which helps families with at least one child under five.

Over the course of the next three weeks, Thomas Franks will provide around 500 meals a week, ranging from cottage pie and chicken tikka masala with rice to apple sponge for dessert.

Kenny Leamy, head of operations in Scotland said: “Given the circumstances, we are just happy to be helping wherever we can.

“We are now hoping that we can raise some more money to feed as many people as we can.

“Thomas Franks would like to take this opportunity to thank St Leonards School, as this initiative would not have been possible without them opening their kitchen, enabling us to prepare meals.

“We would also like to thank our generous donors as without them, none of this would be possible,” he added.

In another show of support, Sainsbury’s Dundee has sent out more than 180 packs of hot cross buns to Caledonia Housing Association for its elderly residents.

The association arranged drop offs at its retirement living developments at Alexander Street, Martingale Gardens and Muirlands in Dundee as well as others in Monifieth and Newport and Northwood Court, Broughty Ferry.

Sainsbury’s Dundee store manager Jordan Mudie said: “We are really strengthening our ties with our community to support those most in need and those who are out supporting us through these unprecedented times.”
