Dundee couple accused of illegally giving sleeping tablets to child for years

Dundee Sheriff Court.

A couple have been accused of illegally administering sleeping tablets to a young child for several years and placing her in serious danger.

Shelley Forrester, 34, and Jonathan Williams, 32, are alleged to have been giving the girl melatonin for six years. It is alleged they gave the child the drug without seeking any medical advice and could have caused serious injury to her health.

Forrester, Alloway Gardens, and Williams, Brook Street, both Dundee, deny a charge of endangering the girl.

They are alleged to have culpably and recklessly administered prescription melatonin tablets to the child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, between January 7 2013 and October 27 last year.

It is alleged they also made other people give the child tablets when they knew the drug had not been prescribed for her.

The charge alleges they had “complete disregard to the risk or side effects and did place her in serious danger of injury to her health”.

The duo were granted bail and a trial was fixed for Dundee Sheriff Court later this year.

Melatonin is a hormone that regulates the sleep–wake cycle.
