Dundee Labour will map out a new “community wealth building” plan in an attempt to save jobs and kickstart the local economy.
The strategy has been put in place in other council areas in the UK to retain wealth created within the local economy to help the financial recovery.
Labour’s plan will include policy recommendations and new approaches to a wide range of urgent topics including care, housing, transport, education and the climate emergency.
Bailie Kevin Keenan, Leader of the Labour group, said the “innovative” plan will be shared with the public and open to contributions.
He said: ‘The plan we have submitted to the (council) Chief Executive covers a wide range of issues.
“At the heart of our plan is a new approach to the city economy.
“We know that incredibly difficult times are coming as a result of the pandemic and the lockdown.
“We have to recognise that our local economy was in very poor shape prior to this crisis and that a new approach is needed.
“The crisis cannot be an excuse for making more of the cuts that were already being lined up. That will do nobody any good in either the short or the long term.”
He added community wealth building has been “tried and tested” by progressive areas across the country.
“It means depending more of our money locally, supporting jobs in Dundee for local people through every action our public and private bodies take.
“The prize is considerable and a more resilient economy that works better for everyone will underpin the many other actions in our plan.
“We have asked for the plan to be turned into a formal report for consideration by council and the Dundee Partnership.
“Labour hopes that the ideas we are bringing forward will be voted on and receive the support of the elected members and the city as a whole.”
