Record-breaking round-the-world cyclist Mark Beaumont has been sworn in as the 13th rector of Dundee University.
Mr Beaumont, who in 2007 
completed an 18,296 mile cycle through 20 countries, was announced as the University’s new rector back in January.
In taking on his new role, the 33-year-old follows in the footsteps of actor Brian Cox and comedian Stephen Fry.
A celebratory reception was held in the Chaplaincy Centre of Dundee University before Mr Beaumont was taken on a pub crawl in a student-drawn carriage.
Speaking with The Courier, Mr Beaumont said: “I’m really looking forward to today with the actual installation.
“The last two or three months have been really busy with meeting loads of students and staff.
“Hopefully today I can really hit the ground running.
“I’m sure it will be a fun day.”
As per tradition, the former Dundee University student was taken on a “drag” by students following his installation.
The 33-year-old revealed: “This wonderful carriage hasn’t been out of the garage for about nine years because my predecessor Brian Cox didn’t do the drag.
“I’m not sure I’ll fit in that old carriage, but what a great history to carry on with.
“I’m looking forward to it with some trepidation-I don’t know exactly what’s in store.
“I’ve asked the students to make sure I can be back at work tomorrow morning in a sober and fit state.”
Mr Beaumont continued: “The wonderful thing about the role of rector is that it is what you make of it.
“It’s a job that is there to be a key link between all the students and the University court.
“I live locally and am only 10 years out of University myself, so I’d like to think I’m connected enough on the ground to make a really big impact.”
DUSA President Tim Hustler added: “A lot of planning has gone into this.
“Dundee has had a lot of success stories recently, but it’s good to finally have a mature student rep getting celebrated.
“I won’t be drinking as I’m operating the brake-I have to be the responsible one.”
