Children warned school roofs are no playground after youngsters caught playing on primary school

Children were spotted playng on the roof of St Vincent's Primary School on Sunday.
Children were spotted playng on the roof of St Vincent's Primary School on Sunday.

Youngsters in the Linlathen area have been told they are taking their lives in their hands by adventuring over the roof of school buildings.

Police officers were called to St Vincent’s Primary on Sunday after three children were spotted climbing high above the concrete.

Residents dialled 999 amidst concern they could seriously injure themselves in a fall.

Though no-one was found on the roof, some children in the area were spoken to, and Police Scotland warned that the roof was not a suitable playground.

East End councillor Christina Roberts, meanwhile, said she had “absolutely horrified” to hear of the incident.

She said: “There used to be an issue with children climbing onto the roof of the library, so this isn’t something new.

“It is something that we have brought to the attention of community wardens and they make sure that no-one is on the roof when they pass by.

“The school roof, however, is much higher than that, so this scares the life out of me.

“It is extremely dangerous behaviour. All it takes is for one child to fall off and they could die quite easily as it is a huge drop onto concrete.”

Police Scotland urged local youngsters to think twice before engaging in such activity.

A spokeswoman said: “We attended at St Vincent’s following reports of concern for three young people on the roof.

“Roofs of buildings are not safe areas to play on and people are reminded of the dangers of climbing upon them.”

Dundee City Council advised young people to “stay safe” when out in the community, adding that such safety issues would be discussed at assemblies.
