No suspicious circumstances surrounding death of woman found in Dundee city centre

Police at the scene in Nethergate.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a 34-year-old woman whose body was found in Dundee city centre.

The woman’s body was found by stairs leading down to an area of waste ground at the rear of Tokyo’s Noodle and Sushi Bar on the Nethergate around 11pm on Thursday.

Police put up a cordon and remained on site, close to a busy shopping area, throughout Friday morning.

Office and shop staff arrived at work on Friday to find the police still on the site, alongside a command unit used during major incidents.

Scene of crime officers were scouring the area for evidence and seen putting white material into a bag on Friday.

One man said the area behind the shops and restaurants on Nethergate is used by people who are homeless.

Alan Stirling, 39, who has been sleeping rough for a year, said: “It’s really shocking that someone’s been found dead. Just a young lassie as well.”

Alastair Brodie, who owns Groucho’s, said: “It came as a bit of a shock to us all here to have a tragedy like this happening so close by.

“We’ve been here for 17 years and nothing like this has ever happened.

“That spot used to be bad for people drinking and starting fires and other antisocial behaviour but it’s been quiet for a long time.

“Our thoughts go out to the woman’s family.”

It is believed the woman was from Fife.

Police originally said the woman’s death was unexplained while officers on site described it as a “crime scene.”

But police later confirmed there were no “apparent” suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.

Detective Inspector Paul Riley said: “Officers attended in the Nethergate, Dundee at around 10.55 pm on Thursday following a report of the sudden death of a 34-year-old woman.

“Her next of kin have been informed.

“Officers will be carrying out further enquiries. However, there are no apparent suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
