Former Menzieshill High pupil’s heartfelt tribute to school

A former pupil of soon to be closed Menzieshill High has launched an emotional project to commemorate his beloved school.

Passionate Mike Hughes decided to document the final days of his former high school after it was confirmed last summer that the facility had been marked for closure.

Mike, 53, who works a TV cameraman and director, attended sold-out tours of the popular school and documented the feelings of staff members and current and ex pupils.

Though the project is at an early stage, Mike hopes his work will act as a fitting tribute to the school he has such fond memories of.

He said: “This place means a lot to me. It’s done so much for me.

“I wanted to get people’s stories, but Dundee has changed, so I wanted to find out if Menzieshill High has changed too.”

“I started talking to friends about wanting to do something, but the time went on and nothing happened.

“But then a few months ago I got in touch with the school’s deputy head, Tom, and it turned out he wanted to do some sort of archive with pictures. This fitted in with my idea.

“I set up Bye Bye Menie High as a Facebook page and the first thing I put on was the programme from the school’s performance of Oliver.

“People commented and ended up having a discussion about this night from more than 40 years ago.

“It’s the idea of not wanting to lose those stories. A lot of people have a lot of memories from here.”

Mike’s work will now continue over the summer months as he strives to ensure the project encapsulates as many memories as possible.

“I’m really glad I’m doing it,” said Mike.

“I’ll be back over the summer to get as many people talking as possible.”

Opened in 1971, Menzieshill High was one of Dundee’s first comprehensive schools.

The Yarrow Terrace school has educated more than 90,000 pupils during the past 45 years.

Despite strong pressure to keep the school open, councillors voted in June last year to close the facility at the end of the current academic year.
