Struggle in dock forces abandonment of Dundee court

Dundee Sheriff Court.
Dundee Sheriff Court.

A Dundee court had to be abandoned after a teen assaulted a police officer and security staff in the dock.

Shane Bertie reacted angrily after being denied the opportunity to hug his partner after he was remanded in custody.

He tried to leave the dock and attempted to push his way past a police officer, before grabbing him by his stab-proof vest and attempting to thrown him to the floor.

It took the officer and three G4S security staff to restrain him in the dock as he shouted at a sheriff and threatened those attempting to calm him down.

His partner made efforts to calm him before herself being ushered from the court by security staff.

Moments earlier Bertie, 19, had admitted breaching a community payback order requiring him to carry out unpaid work.

It had been imposed after he admitted struggling with a prisoner custody officer at an earlier appearance at Dundee Sheriff Court, on November 20, 2014.

During that incident he pulled on handcuffs and struggled with the officer, causing them both to fall through the door of the dock and onto the floor, injuring the officer and a second prisoner escort officer.

Bertie was told by Sheriff Tom Hughes that he would be remanded in custody pending sentencing for that breach.

That sparked the latest angry response from Bertie, who complained “I’ve not had the chance to explain”.

The teen, of Cleghorn Street in Dundee, was taken into custody and will return to court at a later date.

Members of the public were asked to leave the courtroom as the latest incident occurred.

Court business resumed around half-an-hour later.
