Police on Arklay Street on Tuesday morning.

Sandeman Street was shut at both ends after officers were called to the area in the early hours of Tuesday.

Witnesses said more than 10 police vehicles were on the scene, with activity focused around Sandeman Place.

The force confirmed it was called to deal with a disturbance just after 3am.

One woman in neighbouring Court Street said: “I just tried to get through Sandeman Street to catch my bus into town but a policeman stopped me.

“I asked him what was going on and he said it was an incident further along the street.

“I wouldn’t say I’m shocked but it’s a surprise just with the number of policemen and women, and cars there are parked about.

Several officers were at the scene on Tuesday.

“I had to go through Strathmore Street way and when I came out it seemed like half of Tayside police were there on Arklay Street.

“I counted at least eight vans and cars, and there were a lot of policemen and women getting into suits of some kind.

“I saw one with a kind of visor thing on too, that those riot police wear. That shocked me a wee bit.”

One man, who asked not to be identified said: “When I saw police in full riot gear with helmets and carrying battering rams I realised something pretty serious was going on.

“It was really scary to see that in your street first thing in the morning.

“I have no idea what was going on but there was loads of shouting and banging and there were police everywhere.”

Another local resident said: “I was right next door to the incident.

“I didn’t want to go anywhere near it but I could see police all in black.

“It looked to me like they were in riot gear with helmets and face coverings and stab vests.

“There were also two grilled riot vans right outside the block as well as all the police vans in the surrounding streets.”
