Sadness as BHS prepares to close doors for final time

Iconic high street store BHS will close its Dundee branch doors for the final time on Saturday.

It is one of 163 outlets shutting across the country with the loss of 11,000 jobs.

BHS has been a permanent fixture in Dundee’s Wellgate Centre for more than three decades.

News of the closure has hit the city, which has already suffered hundreds of job losses this year, hard.

Dundonians have expressed their dismay over the store’s demise.

Yesterday, Dave Gill , national officer of retail union USDAW, slammed business bosses who allowed the firm to fold and said the business’s 11,000 staff have been “totally let down”.

He said: “This week marks the end of BHS, as the remaining staff go through the difficult and heart breaking task of dismantling stores that many of them have been in for most of their working lives

“Wherever the blame lies for the demise of this once great British retailer, it certainly is not with the staff who are paying high price for corporate decisions that have led us to where we are today.

“The 11,000 loyal staff have been totally let down. There remains some very serious questions that need to be answered, by former owners of the business, about how a company with decades of history and experience in retail has now come to this very sorry end.”

Wellgate manager Peter Aitken expressed his sadness and said he will continue to seek new names to bolster the centre.

He said: “We will be very sad to see the closure of BHS this weekend and our thoughts remain, first and foremost, with the many local staff who are losing their jobs, many after an extended period working with the company.

“They were all part of the Wellgate family and we wish them well for the future.

“As we move forwards, there are ongoing discussions with interested parties about options for the BHS unit and the wider centre.”
