Improvement works on Dundee’s Green Circular route have been completed, allowing more people to walk and cycle along the popular pathway.

A stretch of the 25-mile route at Trottick Ponds had been undergoing an upgrade to allow easier access for people in wheelchairs and those with prams.

The original surface, made of unbound stone dust has been slowly deteriorating.

However, the new work, partially funded by Sustrans and Tactran’s active travel grant, has replaced a 400 metre stretch of land.

Councillor Kevin Cordell, depute convener of neighbourhood services, said: “The improvements will be invaluable to walkers and cyclist at Trottick Ponds.

“I hope that the improvements will encourage more people to come and enjoy the amazing green space we have the city.”

Following a series of investments, the Green Circular is now made of durable macadam from Clatto Park to Panmurefield and from Monifieth to Camperdown Park, in an effort to reduce maintenance costs.

Other improvements around the Green Circular have been carried out including resurfacing at Riverside Drive, Mill o Mains Park, Lower Broughty Ferry Road and Balmuir near Trottick and by replacing signage.

Angus Council haS also been improving the surface on their section between Seven Arches and Grange Road.

The Green Circular is surveyed every year, and plans for improvement are prepared when appropriate.

Dundee City Council has said its cycling infrastructure investment will be guided by the Dundee cycling strategy.

The strategy was adopted in June this year and aims to encourage more people to choose cycling as an alternative to using the car for short functional journeys.

Consultation has identified routes that people would like to ride, where currently there are no paths suitable or where the roads seem dangerous.

Funding from Sustrans has already been agreed to prepare feasibility studies to look into routes along the Kingsway, Lochee Road and Victoria Road.

The Dundee cycle map will be revised and reprinted later this year. The plans for the Waterfront include three more bike links from the Green Circular to the town along shared use paths and toucan crossings.
