Mystery still surrounds Piperdam fatal fire more than a year later

Police carry out a forensic examination of the lodge in 2015.
Police carry out a forensic examination of the lodge in 2015.

Mystery still surrounds the cause of a luxury lodge blaze on the outskirts of Dundee that claimed the life of an Aberdeen man more thanĀ a year ago.

Jamie McLennan, 26, was killed when fire tore through the lodge at Piperdam Golf and Leisure on September 24 2015.

The chalet was so badly burned his body was not discovered until the next day.

ItĀ took two weeks before police officially identified his remains.

The chaletĀ had been rented by two guests who were not there when the fire occurred.

Forensic officers spent days removing evidence in the aftermath of the blaze but have been able to ascertain what started the fire or whether it was deliberate.

The investigation passed on to the Scottish Fatalities Investigation Unit (SFIU) the following month.

Run by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, the SFIU is responsible for investigating unexplained deaths.

However, more than a year after Mr McLennan’s death and nearly 12 months since the investigation was passed to the SFIU, they are no closer to determining the cause of the blaze.

A Crown Office spokesman said: ā€œThe procurator fiscal has received a report in connection with the death of a 26- year-old male in Fowlis, Dundee, onĀ September 26 2015.

ā€œThe investigation into the death, under the direction of SFIU, is ongoing, and the family will be kept updated in relation to any significant developments.ā€

The September 26 date refers to when Mr McLennan was officially pronounced dead, rather than when the fire occurred.

Mr McLennan was seen getting into a taxi near the Grosvenor Casino in Dundee at around 3.30am on September 24, just four hours before the blaze that claimed his life.

He had recently been released from prison after being jailed for three months following an altercation with police at that year’s T in the Park.

The lodge was a stand-alone building and no other chalets or buildings were affected by the fire. No other buildings wereĀ evacuated.

The lodge that was destroyed has since been rebuilt.
