Councillors call for driver patience as Kingsway chaos begins

Dundee councillors have pleaded for patience as drivers brace themselves for traffic chaos on Monday.

Access to the city’s Kingsway East from the busy A90 thoroughfare will be impeded and 500 metres of the carriageway itself restricted.

The works will see the prominent Forfar Road junction undergo a single lane closure between the area’s multi-way traffic lights and Pitkerro Roundabout.

Surrounding areas including Dura Street and Seagate will also suffer traffic management measures.

The safety of drivers and people living in housing estates which may fall victim to rush hour “rat runs” must be prioritised, according to local representatives.

Veteran councillor Ian Borthwick was one of those who pleaded with the more than 12,000 drivers who access the area each day to “exercise special care”.

He said: “In situations like this you can see a lot of frustration on the part of drivers. That is why it is absolutely essential that special care is taken.”

BEAR Scotland has said it has done all it can to reduce inconvenience for motorists throughout the month long roadworks.

The roads maintenance provider said it had consulted with a variety of stakeholders to keep disruption to a minimum.

However, it admitted drivers and commuters were likely to face some inconvenience.
